Nelson’s Lake Rotoiti certainly has some history…

Discovered in 1843 by John Cotterell, it was previously known as Lake Rotu iti, then Lake Arthur until the present.
Julius Von Haast observed in 1859 that “I’m sure that the time is not far distant when this spot will become the favourite abode of those whose means and leisure will permit them to admire this picturesque setting”

Since 1996 this certainly has been the case when the Alpine Lodge Loop the Lake was introduced by Nelson Events.

Annually the 25km circuit of “the Little Lake” (nearby Rotoroa is known as the Big Lake ) has proved very popular with the trailrunning fraternity and Saturday’s 24th edition is no exception with all 400 spots sold out.

150 from the Nelson region will line up, the rest travelling from all over the country.

Quickest could be Robert Rawles or Callum Wilkie however well seasoned Vajin Armstrong has the pedigree to perform on a consistent basis.
Klaartje van Schie and Julia Anderson should take up two of the female positions on the podium.

Following Loop the Lake and it’s Sold Out Status are both July’s Captain Cook’s Landing along the Queen Charlotte Track plus September’s Abel Tasman Coastal Classic with both having Waiting Lists in operation.

The “rugged but runnable” Dun Run began back in 1995 and on August 31st will celebrate its 25th Anniversary. Two options are available to venture into Nelson’s backwoods and mineral belt. The Original 26km will begin from the Maitai Dam whilst the Long Dun Run has 39km in its journey starting from Central Nelson following the Maitai River as an initial Entries open mid April.
