Take care on the track to Meretoto (Ship Cove) as there are works underway at the top of the saddle to build a new track. This isn't ready as yet, so stick to the main track and follow the signage around the area. Be aware of extra machinery, and rock fall, including some little steps (see pic).

Since his early running days, Nelson’s Callum Wilkie has always had the Alpine Lodge Loop the Lake in his sights as one event to conquer.

On Saturday he lined up with 363 others and at the end he was ahead of them all, completing the 25km circuit in 1.44.57.
Wellington’s Theo Wordsworth trailed just under 4 minutes behind with Ethan Helliwell ( Nelson) nudging out experienced Aucklander Janes Kuegler for third.

The top three women were all locally based albeit one from across the Tasman.
Australia’s Little Athletics program gives their youngsters a solid introduction to gaining “fast feet”. Julia Anderson certainly obtained hers plus a solid multi sport...

Discovered in 1843 by John Cotterell, it was previously known as Lake Rotu iti, then Lake Arthur until the present.
Julius Von Haast observed in 1859 that “I’m sure that the time is not far distant when this spot will become the favourite abode of those whose means and leisure will permit them to admire this picturesque setting”

Since 1996 this certainly has been the case when the Alpine Lodge Loop the Lake was introduced by Nelson Events.

Annually the 25km circuit of “the Little Lake” (nearby Rotoroa is known as the Big Lake ) has proved very popular with the trailrunning fraternity and Saturday’s 24th edition is no exception with all 400 spots sold out.
