Trailways Dun Run

Paula Canning’s trail running ability has certainly climbed in status since she competed in the NZ Team at the World Mountain Running Champs recently in both Austria & Italy.

The experience and confidence gained paid off in Saturday’s Trailways Dun Run when she went out hard from the Maitai Dam startline and stayed in that mindset with her 22km run being the highlight of the 20th Anniversary event.

Sophie Hart held a more than respectable 1.52.58 record beforehand but Canning eclipsed that by more than a minute with her superb 1.51.29 effort .

Elizabeth Roberts and Caitlin Fielder had a good race for second and third.

Back in 1995 Greg Fraine was the inaugural winner and 20 years later that again looked likely , but for the single 200m track that lead into the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary finish shute.

Darron Jones had the advantage and Fraine had to be content to follow with the only way to try and get past being jumping over Jones , but that could have had consequences, especially injury wise. Jones winning in 1.46.03 with Fraine given the same time

Still Fraine set the other record of the day, 1.46.03 for the Mens 50-59 with the man he surpassed , Marlborough’s Robbie Barnes also going under his 2013 record time to finish 3rd overall on Saturday

2 others from ’95, Chris Fitchett and Stu Cottam also earn’t their anniversary medals as did Barry Rowe for 19 consecutive finishes.

Nelson Event’s attention now switches to Woollaston Estate and the refreshingly rural The Hits RunMahana on Sunday November 30th.

Already over 600 have registered with this number sure to swell by the November 18th close off
