Striders Spud Run this Weekend

Nelson Striders invite runners & walkers to join them this Sunday for their trail run or walk to Third House & Return.

It’s their way to commemorate the special day, many years ago when the plight of the first Settlers was recognised with a walk up the Dun Mountain Track….with the first Monday in August being known as Spud Monday
Our forbearers in the mid 1800’s were so near to starvation that they had to dig up their already planted seed potatoes to use as food and replant the eyes for their next crop.
It became a tradition, all shops, businesses and schools closing for the day and hundreds of people headed up the Dun, some stopping at Third House while the more hardly continued past Coppermine Saddle and onto the Dun Mountain proper before returning./

So the NBS Nelson Striders have chosen the day “Spud Monday”to bring back their piece of history.

To join them meet at the OK Corral in upper Brook Street on Sunday 6th August
Trail Walkers will depart at 7.30am followed by Runners at 8.30am
Afterwards a bowl of fries at the New Street Steak House will be compulsory
