Run Mahana 2011 Provisional Results now online

While the southwesterly winds may have buffeted most of the competitors in Saturday’s Classic Hits RunMahana 12 ‘blew’ away records as they ran or walked around the rolling circuit surrounding Woollaston Estates.

Phil Costley was supreme, 1hour 11minutes 25seconds for his double lapper in the Half Marathon – unchallenged other than by his watch. If the field had started five minutes earlier he would have finished in time to ’warm-down’ in the 5km through the vineyard.

Paula Canning’s penchant for the course was again displayed in her sub 1.30 performance, a couple of minutes outside her 2009 best but enough to show she’s again on the right track when Buller’s 30th Anniversary comes around early February. Joining her no doubt in Westport will be Wendy Healey, as she lowered her 21.1km walk time by over a minute.

The 10km attracted the biggest field, close to 400 and the country side was awash with them all focussed on the finish line to take home their special event labelled vinetage. At the front was Trevor Voyce, still not able to sit down and relax after his ultra efforts of late and his 37.43 is the new mark to beat in 2012 and beyond. Nikki Nisbett set a scorching sub 1 hour and joins Bevan Cook as the new walk times to chase.

Prostate Cancer ‘walked’ away with over $1800 but it wasn’t all charity for their survivor members who manned the course as marshalls along with the much appreciated support of Mahana and Upper Moutere Schools, FC Soccer club and the NBS Strider Hands.

Many will be back to add to their cellar collection on March 11th next year riding the Tussock Spirit of the Moutere. Before that though, Nelson Events ‘wind down’ their sporting event organising for 2011 with the Classic Hits Jingle Bells Jog on Sunday December 11th. The run, walk, skate or scoot from the City to the Surf of Tahunanui Beach, which is an annual favourite, with many participants getting into Christmas spirit wearing festive costumes raises funds for the local branch of the Heart Foundation.
