TRAINING TIPS EMAILER #1
Courtesy of migym

We hope your training is going well, and that you are enjoying the spring weather and longer daylight hours.

For those of you who are yet to get into training… the time to start is now! No longer can you put off the start of your training, the sooner you start, the better your Run Mahana day will be!

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is the pain and stiffness you feel in your muscles after doing strenuous exercise, or exercise that you’re not used to. It’s a symptom of muscle damage as a result of eccentric contractions. DOMS usually kicks in a couple of days after the exercise, and can take up to a week to go away!

It hurts, but it can be minimised or even avoided. You need to train smart, and help your body recover.

Training smart:

Progress your training slowly – too much too soon will kill your legs.

Take it easy on the downhills – a big causer of DOMS. There are no major fitness gains on the downhills so chill out!

The stronger your legs are the more they can handle – so do some strength endurance training eg lunges, squats, single leg step ups.

Balance your training program with speed, hills, endurance and strength endurance work, then your legs will be able to cope with the demands of race day.

Make sure your training program is applicable to YOU, based on your fitness levels and your ability.

Recovery:

The most important thing in your training schedule is recovery. And it’s often the most undervalued.

Active recovery is great, a short easy jog or walk is ideal if you are tired or sore.

Get regular sports massage. Keep on top of the tension, knots and tight spots, and your legs will thank you for it. Also, running creates metabolic waste products that build up in your legs, and it’s important to flush these out. Call MiMassage to get your legs back in shape!  03 539 0116

If you would like some advice from an expert, either for your training, nutrition or recovery, then contact Nige Burgess from migym on 027 411 8463 or email nige.burgess.pt@gmail.com

TRAINING TIPS EMAILER #2
Courtesy of Brett from Shoe Clinic Nelson

Shoes, Buying the Right Pair

The Training Tips are also available from www.runmahana.co.nz on the Training page.

“Don’t pick a shoe, let a shoe pick you.” This sums up the Shoe Clinic philosophy.

Feet can broadly be categorized in 4 main types – supinated, neutral, over pronated, and severely over pronated.

Shoe Clinic takes you through a fitting process using Footscan (a high-tech computerized foot pad) and Video Gait Analysis to help select the shoe that will fit your foot type best.

This is backed up by our 30 Day Money Guarantee. We also individually measure each foot for length and width to ensure the best fit to help prevent the likes of black toe nails and blisters.

Don’t underestimate the importance of correct socks and apparel. Cotton can absorb up to 20x its’ own weight in moisture, the last thing you want against your skin when exercising. At Shoe Clinic we carry an extensive range of technical apparel and socks.

As part of our sponsorship of Run Mahana, Shoe Clinic Nelson is offering all entrants 15% off Asics Footwear (for their own use) from now until race day on November 25th. Just bring in your e-mail entry confirmation to qualify

(Shoe Clinic is located in Bridge St, Nelson).

Happy training!!

Warming Up and Cooling Down

You lead a busy life, you can barely find the time to go for your run or walk, let alone warm up and cool down ... wrong! Make time. To maximise the benefits from your training, and to avoid injuries, you need to look after your body.

Warming up:

Start out at an easy speed and build up to your desired pace over 5-10 mins.

The faster your planned run/walk is, the longer the warm up should be.

If you have any particular tight muscles, try some dynamic stretches to get them moving.

Muscles must first be warmed up in order to become elastic – just like chewing gum!

Cooling down:

If you abruptly finish your run/walk session without a cool down, you can find yourself stiff and sore later on.

Spend the last 5-10 mins of your training gradually decreasing speed.

Stretch afterwards to lengthen your muscles back to where they like to be.

Try to keep moving for the hour after your run/walk – if you sit non-stop for the hour after, you may not be able to get up again!

If you would like more help with flexibility, stretches or any injuries or niggles you have, call Nige Burgess on 027 411 8463 or email nige.burgess.pt@gmail.com

And don't forget the miMassage team are always here to help.
Call 539 0116 to book yourself a massage, and recover faster!

TRAINING TIPS EMAILER #4

Nutrition Tips for the last few days before your event

Experiment with different foods during your training programme but never try something new in the last 2/3 days before your event. If it doesn't 'agree' with your tummy you may have difficulties during the event.

It can be helpful to 'train' your digestive system to deal with food when exercising, so consider trialing your 'event breakfast', (that is, what you think you will eat on event morning) before some of your regular training sessions.  That way, you are giving your body the best chance to get used to eating prior to exercising, and you will start to see what your body can handle.

The night before
Consider having a high carbohydrate meal the night before your event, pasta or lots of vegetables are good options.

Drink extra water.

Nutrition Tips for the day of the event

For breakfast choose something low in fibre eg Toast or Light Muesli.

Drink more water.

Have your Breakfast early - at least two hours before your event if you can, so your system has time to process the food, absorb all the energy from it and discard the waste.

Keep sipping on water in the lead up to your event and remember to take on water at each of the drink stops, especially if the day is warm.

And of course, remember to pack something to snack on after finishing, like a honey sandwich or banana to help settle your stomach before you enjoy some of the delicious food options available to purchase at the Celebration Area at Woollaston Estates.

Mahana is situated on the rolling hills between Nelson and Mouteka in the Upper Moutere area and is easily accessible via car (approximately 40 minutes drive from Nelson city)

What happens at Registration?
What category do I enter?
I am training for the walk half marathon - is the training plan the same for a walker as opposed to a runner?
Our workplace is keen to get involved with the event - what can we do?

What happens at Registration?

At registration, you will collect your race pack in exchange for your Registration Certificate (this will be emailed one week prior to the event, and we will also have spare copies available on the day for those that don't have access to a printer).

Included in your race pack is your race number, this needs to be placed on your front so that it is clearly visible to all marshalls and event officials on the course at all times (pins are provided).

Please note your race number is not the registration number provided on your entry confirmation (you do not need to know the registration number to register at the event).

Also included in your 'race pack' is a Timing Transponder - this will need to be secured to your shoe laces.

What category do I enter?

In the Half Marathon and 10km events there is a choice of entering as a runner, a walker, or a hybrid. If you plan to run the entire way then enter as a runner, if you want to walk the whole way enter as a walker, or if you want to walk the course but have the option to jog when you feel like it, then consider entering the hybrid cateogry.

If you enter as a runner, you can still walk some of the distance, and entering in the running section means you also have the chance to win a performance prize (there are no performance prizes available for the hybrid category - instead, there will be special spot prizes in addition to the general spot prize pool).

I am training for the walk half marathon - is the training plan the same for a walker as opposed to a runner?

Depending on your walking speed, a good general guide may be to double the time allocated on the run training plan. For advice, contact Rachael at migym - rachael@migym.co.nz

Our workplace is keen to get involved with the event - what can we do?

We have a special corporate tent area available for workplaces, so you can bring along your pop up tent and relax in your own special area - just email or call us to find out more information and to book your space.
admin@nelsonevents.co.nz

Then get onto your management for them to provide the chairs, picnic etc ... ;)
