Swim
4 lengths

Everyone must walk inside the pool complex.

Follow the instructions of the marshalls.
You will be moving under lane ropes to enable you to start on one side of the pool and finish on the other.
(Care is required around the pool - it gets very slippery)!
If you need to remove prescription glasses then you can leave these with one of the pool marshalls. Please let us know if you need help to collect them once you exit the pool.

Transition
Only participants will be allowed in the transition area. This protects your bike plus all the others as well.

After completing your cycle in Domett Street you will be met by a group of 'bike catchers' who will take your bike from you while you go to the pool.

You will need to collect your own bike post race - please don't ask supporters to collect this on your behalf.

Finish
Your time stops when you complete your fourth length of the pool. After completing your swim please exit the pool as quickly as possible. As you leave the water you will be given a numbered disc. Hand this disc to the recorder who will need to see your race number (written on your hand and leg) as well so that we can accurately record your triathlon time (your time will be recorded on a separate computer when you finish your fourth length).

Safety
For the safety of all participants we do not permit you to be accompanied throughout the triathlon (adults or children) ie. no buggies, child bike seats etc. This includes vehicles, or cycles.

Wearing/using ipods, mp3 players, walkmans etc is not allowed.

Supporters
Maitai Valley Road will be closed for non event and resident traffic from 9.00am to 10.30am. Absolutely no supporters vehicles will have access to or be able to exit Maitai Valley Road during that time (excepting the event crew, emergency services and Maitai Valley Residents). We recommend supporters leave their cars in Nile Street (past Tasman St) or in Tory St to be outside the cycle course area to lessen the risk for the competitors and to avoid an inconvenience. Please note that Domett Street will also be closed to supporter's vehicles.

We look forward to having you come along and sharing the day with your partner, husband, father, son, friend, however, we ask that you are considerate to all and follow the instructions of event crew who are there to make the event safe and enjoyable for all participants.

Collecting your helmet and shoes
Return to 'drop-off' area and when convenient with marshall collect your shoes and helmet. We recommend you mark your shoes, helment and bike for easy identification. You will be given a number for your helment (and bike).

Collecting your bike
Return to Domett Street and when convenient with marshall collect your bike
We ask that you remember that others are still completing their event, and keep off the pathway to give them plenty of room.  Either walk on the grass alongside the path, or use the exit to Bridge St (via the side of the pool complex).

Prizegiving
Prizegiving venue - The Botanics (base of the Centre of NZ).
We aim to start prizegiving just after 3.00pm.
In wet weather, we have an alternative venue - please listen to instructions by event crew at briefing on event morning for further information.

Training

This event consists of either a 5km Run or a 3km Walk, followed by a 14km road cycle and then 133yd swim at Riverside Pool (4 lengths).

For a 4 Week Express Program click here

Please remember that this is a generic plan and is to be used as a guide only.  Always consult your doctor before beginning any new training plan, and if you start to experience pain, ease off and see your GP.

To avoid soreness in the legs from jarring on the road, attempt to stay on a grass surface for most of your walking/jogging in the first couple of weeks.

If you are training for the Walk Triathlon, then substitute the jogging for walking.  If you feel you want to jog during your training then do so, it won't hurt your preparation.  Remember that on the day you won't be able to jog if you've entered as a walker.

Don't worry if you cannot run for the duration written on the program - make it a mixture of running and walking as you feel.

The Kaiteriteri 10km (March 19th) is a great opportunity to get some experience in a 'race', as are the weekly NBS Striders Summer Series Run and Walks.

You may find it easier to train if you have company - find a mate to enjoy the next few weeks with.

Feel free to contact us if you have any queries regarding your training, or the triathlon.

SWIM TRAINING

Firstly a big congratulations as you have made the decision to try a TRI!

The first thing to remember when you begin your swimming training is relaxation. You may not be the most comfortable with swimming or you may even have bad memories from the past, so the first thing to do with your training is just to play around in and under the water. Practice standing back up after being horizontal, even if that means holding the side of the pool initially. With all your training it is mind over matter and keep a positive attitude.

The Swim component of the TRI is 4 lengths, so throughout the training you will be attempting to build up your swim fitness so you can complete these 4 lengths in a row. Remember that it is perfectly fine to have a rest at each end of the pool during the event, and if you prefer one stroke over another use that stroke (that could also mean using the kickboard throughout)

You may notice that you tire quickly in the water, especially as the swim component is at the end of the triathlon. So if on race day that means that you need to take your breaths when swimming more frequently or rest more at the end of each length - thats totally OK.

Some Training Sessions to Try
These sessions can be performed in a 25m or 33yd pool - with no need to adapt. If at any stage you need to decrease or even increase the distance - GO FOR IT.
Change the strokes as you prefer, and if you feel more comfortable use a 'aqua jogging' belt to aid the floatation. (these will also be available on race day if wanted)
Over time increase the number of sets you do of each part of the program ie 2 x 2L can increase to 3 x 2L, 4 x 2L and so on...)

Key:
WU - Warm Up
F/S - Frontcrawl
B/S - Breastroke
BK/S - Backstroke
Kick - legs only with or without a kickboard (Depending upon your level)
WD - Warm Down
L - Length

Beginners Session
* 16 Lengths *

4 x 1L - walking the shallow and swimming the deep
3 x 2L - F/S - aiming to swim the 2L continuously - Rest at the end of the 2L of 30-60sec depending upon your level
4 x 1L - Kick - aiming to really use those legs and make them work.
2L - Swim - nice and slowly concentrating on feeling good and comfortable in the water

Fitness Session
4L - Continuous swim - nice long strokes and kicks - warming up the body
4 x 3L - Continuous swim 30sec Rest interval (reduce the rest interval as and when can)
2 x 4L - Continuous kick - this will become harder as the distance increases concentrate on long loose legs and floppy feet. (the toning to your gluteals will be great!! and an added bonus) 30sec Rest Interval
4 x 1L - Sprint - going as fast as you can then rest for a maximum of 30sec. When able reduce the amount of rest - you want to be 'almost back to normal' breathing before your start again.
4L - Swim - long slow strokes stretching out as you swim.

The Port Nelson Blokes' Day Out takes place in Nelson City.
It starts from Branford Park, which is at the start of the Maitai Valley (off Nile Street).
The finish is at Riverside Pool, Riverside Drive, Nelson (off Collingwood Street).

What is the Nelson Insurance Brokers Generation Challenge?

This has been introduced the encourage Fathers and Sons, Grandfathers and Grandsons and either Fathers and Daughters to have some fun together - training and doing their respective triathlon.

Dad/Grandad can do the Port Nelson Blokes' Day Out, Son/Grandson can do either the Port Nelson Blokes' Day Out or the Port Nelson Kauri Kids Aquathon (depending on their age).

In 2011 this category was expanded to allow Father and Daughter to challenge themselves - with daughter completing either the Aquathon or the Taylors Nelson Women's Triathlon (held one week later).

All entrants go in a special spot prize draw.

How do I know which category to enter?

Entering in the Run category means you will run 5km. If you want to walk some of the 5km, you can. Entering in the Walk category means you will cover a 3km distance, and you must walk at all times, including during transition from the bike to the swim. You are not allowed to run if you enter the walk category.

Can I change my category on the day?

No. If you need to change your category after entering you need to arrange this with the organisers before the Wednesday preceeding the event. All entries are loaded onto a computer programme which calculates times and results, thus we can't make last minute changes.

What does Year 7-13 mean?

This is one of the age group categories - to enter this category, you must be in Year 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 or 13 at school. (That's the old Form 1-7). We cannot accept entries from anyone younger than this - children from Years 4-8 may enter the Port Nelson Kauri Kids Aquathon.

How do I prepare for the triathlon?

It is important that you do some preparation for this event - it will help make the day more enjoyable! Check out the four week express plan on this website for some ideas or contact the team at Nelson Events for more help and suggestions for your training.

What order are the disciplines?

Run 5km or Walk 3km, then cycle 14km, and finish with the swim (4 lengths of Riverside Pool).

Why is the swim last?

In most cases the swim is now the first part of a triathlon, however, this isn't always the case. It is standard when the swim is in open water for two reasons: 1. Triathletes wear wetsuits and need time before the race starts to get into them 2. In open water swim triathlons, it is safer for the swim to be first so that triathletes are not swimming when they are tired. In pool triathlons, the swim is often placed at the end because; it allows all the field to start together rather than in small waves of around 10 (or however wide the pool is ) and as the environment is easier to control for safety, it isn't such a risk having tired athletes entering the pool. For most of the swim it is possible to touch the bottom or a lane rope, thus eliminating risk and allowing people not as confident in the water to still participate. If you want to use a kick board or an aqua belt in the water, you are most welcome to. These will be available poolside as you enter the pool.

Can we enter as a relay team?

No. This event is designed to allow you the opportunity to complete a triathlon. If you only do a section of it as part of a team, you are not completing a triathlon ... you are only competing in part of a triathlon. We want you to experience doing one! The distances have been set so that with a reasonable level of fitness most men will be able to complete the event.

What is the NBS Workmates Challenge?

Two staff members of the same workplace complete the triathlon and go in the special Workmates Spot Prize draw. You can enter this category as two males, or one male and one female (the female does the Taylors Nelson Women's Triathlon one week later).

Can I enter on the day?

No. Absolutely no entries will be accepted on the day. Also, no changes to categories will be accepted on the day.

What time should I go to Branford Park on race day?

Registration is from 7.45am to 8.30am We suggest you come along early to avoid the queues that build up as time goes on. Early registration gives you more time to make sure you are ready for the start.

What happens at Registration?

You will be asked for your Registration Certificate (this is emailed to all particpants in the week prior to the event). The marshalls will then give you a race pack with two stickers inside. The small one is to be placed on your bike for easy identification after the event, the larger one is to go on the front of your helmet. You then need to get body numbered. This is your race number written on your hand and your leg (please be dressed in the shorts you are going to wear for the triathlon). This needs to be done by one of our official marshalls - you cannot do this yourself.

How do I rack my bike?

You can choose whereabouts you want to place your bike on the racks inside the transition area. It is important that you remember where you have placed your bike so that when you enter transition after the run/walk you can go directly to your bike (and not try and find it)! Look for visual aids, such as what your bike is lined up with, or count the number of rows from where you will enter transition to where your bike is racked. Remember to put your helmet either on your bike or next to it - as you can't leave transition without your helmet securely fastened on your head.

What should I wear to compete in?

You should wear clothing that you feel comfortable running or walking and cycling in. Make sure you have practised in this gear before the event as you want to make sure you don't rub in sensitive areas or have anything that is annoying you. When swimming you may like to wear goggles - you will have to carry these with you as you do not return to the start line - your bike is left in Dommett Street and then you run/walk through to the pool.

Should I name my clothing?

It is very wise to name your shoes and helmet (and any clothing you intend taking off for the swim). This can avoid a lot of confusion when collecting your gear afterwards.

How is my time recorded?

When you touch the end of the pool on your fourth and final lap, the time keeper will push the button on the timing clock. This has a number recorded next to it, which will match the finish order that the finish line marshall puts you in as you exit the pool. Please move efficiently out of the pool when you have finished swimming as we need to clear the area for fellow finishers. As you exit the pool, a recorder will note down your race number, then you can make your way out to the decking area and celebrate your achievement. You've done it!

Can someone else collect my gear and my bike?

No, for security reasons, only you can collect your helmet, shoes, etc and your bike.

When and where is prizegiving?

There are some awesome prizes up for grabs - you do need to be present to claim them. Prizegiving will be at the Botanics (base of the Centre of NZ) at approximately 3pm. This will be confirmed via email closer to event day.

Where does the course go?

START: Branford Park, Maitai Valley RUN triathlon: Go along Maitai Valley Road to the bridge at Sharlands Creek (a marshall will tell you when to turn), go back to the 'splash' and cross the Maitai River at the ford. Then run across the paddock towards the golf course (a marshall will direct you to turn), then follow the Maitai Walkway. You will go under a bridge and then follow the river around the sports field. At the next bridge come up off the track and back on the Maitai Valley Road. Stay hard to the right of the road back to transition area to get your bike. WALK triathlon: Go along the Maitai Valley Road to the 'splash' and follow as per run triathlon above. CYCLE: Keeping to the left of the road, cycle along the Maitai VAlley Road to the Maitai Camp (turn when safe), return along the Matai Valley past the transition area and onto Nile Street. Follow Nile Street to the roundabout, turn left into Tasman Street, following onto Brook Street. Turn Right at Miro Street (which will take you across the culvert) then right onto Westbrook Tce, right at Scotland Street, across the culvert and back onto Brook St. Return to the roundabout and go right onto Nile Street then left into Dommett Street. Continue along Dommett Street until a marshall directs you to dismount and one of the catchers takes your bike. Take your helmet with you to the pool. To the Pool. From Domett Street go down onto the pavement that follows the river around to Riverside Pool. WALK traithloners must walk this section. You will be required to leave your shoes, helmet and any clothing you don't want for swimming outside the pool in a designated area. Follow the instructions of the marshalls. You will go up a ramp into the pool area and then alongside the pool to the far (shallow) end to enter the pool via the steps. Note: ALL TRIATHLETES must walk inside the pool area. SWIM: You will complete 4 lengths of Riverside Pool. Starting at the steps complete one length, go under the lane rope and swim your second length. Go under the next lane rope and complete your 3rd length. To finish your swim you should be in the lane on the opposite of the pool to where you entered. Your time will be recorded when you touch the end wall. Exit the pool via the steps as quickly as possible. Less competent swimmers are asked to swim next to the lane ropes at all times to help avoid congestion when faster swimmers are passing.
