Kaiteriteri Gold Half Marathon & 10km

While a few stayed away with Cyclone Lusi likely to show an appearance, 291 turned up and all finished Saturday’s 24th Kaiteriteri Gold Half Marathon and 10km.

Phil Costley, again scribed his name onto the Half Marathon Honours Board posting 1 hour 12minutes 33seconds for his fourth consecutive victory. Again he was in a class of his own no doubt targeting a major marathon in the months ahead. Simon Leaning kept up his consistency with his effortless looking gait recording 1.21.27, chased home by Marlborough’s Robbie Barnes.

73 from outside the region competed including athletes from USA, Australia, France, Netherlands, and Switzerland.

Porirua’s Lizzie Wesley-Smith relegated Colette Read and Robyn Deane to the minor placings, telling the crowd at the prizegiving it was the sunshine that attracted her to come and take up the challenge.

Andrew Barker admitted later it was easier to run than walk the distance however despite that he was a clear winner in the Walk section with Lyn Smith taking out the women”s title

Nigel Burgess held on for the 10km victory easing away from Blenheim’s Jimmy Johnston by 24 seconds. Millie Markwardt, enjoying a Gap year from Germany, added an overseas running race victory to her CV while the Walkers titles for 2014 are ‘owned’ by Peter Hague of Nelson and Lisa Johnston (Havelock).

Consideration is being given to ‘tweaking’ the half marathon course for its upcoming 25th anniversary celebrations and with the coastline cycle trail from Kaiteriteri to Riwaka almost complete it may well be ready to incorporate into the 21.1km journey on March 14th, 2015.
