The Hits Run Mahana 2015

600 plus competitors consolidated Sunday’s The Hits Run Mahana with a buzz around the vineyard Estate all morning. Gone was the Half Marathon with plenty of others in the top of the South region for those wanting to run or walk 21.1km. Tweaked were the starts for the 10km and 5km with the first few hundred metres along the rows of the budding vines creating a refreshing atmosphere compared to the previous dust kicked up along School Road.

Simon Mardon certainly showed the soles of his shoes though to the other 386 chasers behind him in the 10km. Handicapped by a dodgy ankle leading up to the race all was forgotten once the starter’s air horn went off – alas with a ‘fizz’ as often happens!

His 36minute 44 second was more than creditable on the demanding course – albeit 300 metres or so long. Brian Kemp, training for the Big Day Out on the Heaphy in February finished a few ticks over 38minutes with Peter van Veen the only other to break 40 minutes.

Colette Read, ever consistent, had sole charge of the ‘girls gangs’ whose presence certainly outnumbered the men on the day – 378 to 162. Sandy Vincent and Mandy White followed.

The walk was a Pauling affair, Steve and Barb taking the honours while Hybrids, those wanting to walk, run, run, walk or whatever saw Jenny Irvine and Yogi Unger across the finish shute first.

Those in the 5km obviously had half the distance to complete but through the vineyard rows is testing. Josh Barry clocked 19.31 with Donald Hilson the only other to threaten 20minutes, 24 seconds adrift. Holy Russell had a minute to spare over Izzy Thurlow and Kayla Crimp-Palmer.
Helen Tapper and Jeff Leckie were walk winners and hybrid honours for 2015 went Chad Mitchener and Hayley Bashford’s way.

The Jingle Bells Jog and Santa Walk is the last event on this year’s calendar. Sunday December 13th and it’s time to support the Heart Foundation in it’s annual run, walk, skate or scoot from Trafalgar Park to Tahunanui Beach – approximately 5km. Entry fee $5 for individuals or $10 per family including the family pooch, with all going to the worthy charity that keeps us all ‘ticking’.
