TRAIL

Escape from Tane's Forest

Sat, 30/06/2012 June 30th 2012, Nelson. Long (25km) and Short (14km) options.

2012 DESTINATION NELSON!

The newest event on the Nelson Events Trail Running Calendar. The 2012 event is to be held in the stunning surrounds of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary.

This one's GOT IT ALL.

History, Mystery and Scenery.

There is both a LONG course (approx 25km) and a SHORT course (approx 14km).

Imagine a place where native plants and animals thrive without threat from introduced pests, alive with birsong, where rare species such as kiwi, tuatara and kakapo roam freely.

That's THE MYSTERY as you tread a circuit inside The Brook Waimarama (Clear Waters) Sanctuary close to Nelson's CBD.

But first, THE HISTORY and THE SCENERY

The day begins as you head up Nelson's 1862 'railtrail' which began as New Zealand's first railway, albeit horse drawn, transporting the chromite and copper spoils from the Dun Mountain Mineral Belt before closing in 1866 due to unfavourable returns.

Will it be favourable for you on June 30th?

Those in the Short course (approx 14kms total) then head into the Sanctuary at 4 Corners for their breathtaking circuit.

The Long course (approx 25kms total) trailrunners ascend Fringed Hill (793m) pausing occasionally to view the panoramic picture postcard of Nelson City and Tasman Bay way below.

Fringe Hill Escape from Tane's Forest

From there it's along Black Diamond Ridge to Third House followed by a quick descent down the old railway bench (cutting) which is pretty much still intact although no remains of sleepers or rails remain.  At Four corners it's into the Sanctuary to chase those in front.

But the day is not yet over ...

muck in with your mates

Want to run with your mates?  Be it true mates, workmates, family mates or training mates?  Then enter in the 'Muck in with your Mates' challenge - only rule is that you start together and finish together (all still complete the distance individually).  Can be completed in twos or threes, and all 'mates' go in the draw for a special major spot prize to be drawn at the event prizegiving.  A great way to get into the trail running scene with a friend or encourage a friend that just needs a little mateship to get through or just a perfect excuse to catch up with a mate whilst running the trails.

Supporters

The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is available for members of the public to access and we encourage supporters to visit the Sanctuary before and after the event. However, come 'race time', we recommend that you don't enter the Sanctuary whilst the runners are competing to avoid unneccessary congestion.  Instead, cheer them on!

Supporters can see competitors of Escape from Tane's Forest at the Sanctuary building at the Brook Dam at around the mid / two thirds point of the course (depending on which event your 'competitor' is completing, and then again when they return to come across the finish line. This will be fantastic opportunity to cheer them on and provide the neccessary encouragement to soldier them on for their Sanctuary ESCAPE!

A Supporters package can be purchased for $50, which includes a Prizegiving Function ticket (includes meal and a celebratory drink to enjoy with your competitor on the Saturday afternoon/evening) and a guided walk in the Sanctuary on the Sunday morning.  Your competitor can join you on the relaxed walk on Sunday morning at no extra charge.

There are limited numbers so you must prebook.

Start Time

Start times
Short Course:  8.30am
Long Course:  9.00am
All competitors must check in at least 30 minutes before their allocated start times.

Compulsory clothing will be inspected.

The COURSE

The Start area is from the grassy field at the OK Corral area, Brook Street, Nelson and heads up the track into the Codgers Network before a short section on the Tantragee Road that leads you to the start of the Dun Mountain track.

The start area for Escape from Tane's Forest 2011

LONG COURSE: (25km approx)
The Long course begins where Nelson’s Dun Mountain Railway left the city flats back in 1862.  From Codgers network, the course meets the Tantragee Road where a short section on the 4WD road leads you to the start of the Dun Mountain Walkway.

Heading up the old line runners will turn left at 4 corners to ascend Fringed Hill at an elevation of 793metres with it’s splendid panoramic views across Tasman Bay and the city way below.

From there it’s into the bush and along Black Diamond Ridge towards the mineral belt that promised wealth to the Top of the South two centuries ago.  After this beautiful bush sojourn across Nelson’s skyline, Third House is soon reached and from there it’s down the historic railway line to Four Corners (this is the section shown on the GPS map below - then follow as per short course/sanctuary loop) where the mystery begins with a circuit within the sanctuary that is simply stunning and will amaze most – including many locals who never knew it ever existed.

SHORT COURSE:  (14km approx)
The shorter course does not include the Fringed Hill, Black Diamond Ridge and Third House section but will still test all - we expect the traverse to be between one and a half to two and a half hours.

Runners also start at the grassy area of the OK Corrall, head into the Codgers Network, then to the Dun Mountain walkway track to four corners, and instead of turning left to Fringed Hill (as for the long course), runners drop down into the 'goat track' (essentially the 5th track at four corners) which will take you into the Sanctuary.  Runners then complete a loop of the sanctuary as per the 'Sanctuary Loop' map below.

Both courses will be marked.

START THROUGH FRINGED HILL AND BACK TO FOUR CORNERS (GPS) - first section of the Long Course

SANCTUARY LOOP - finishing loop for both long and short courses (GPS)
The Sanctuary Loop (GPS) - click View Details at the bottom of the box below (for an extra groovy feature, once loaded, click on Player and view).

This loop begins once you have reached the Sanctuary aid station (after taking the track from 4 corners to the Sanctuary).  The Sanctuary aid station (located next to the Sanctuary building) is the perfect place for supporters to watch their runners, as they will pass this twice (before embarking on the Sanctuary loop and then to finish).

migym training tips

1.    Flexibility: A good flexibility routine will not only prevent injury but improve performance. As tempting as it is to forget this aspect of training, running, injury and a corresponding decline in flexibility are closely linked. Always stretch after running and you will be doing the body a favour. Have you tried the stretch class at migym?? It’s on Thursdays at 6pm.  A great way to keep on top of flexibility each week.

2.    Relax: You have plenty of time obtain race day fitness. This is not the time to attempt faster running. A good guide in the base phase is to finish a run feeling like you could have gone further.

3.    Keep it Interesting: Running with likeminded people and varying the tracks you run will help your motivation immensely particularly on longer runs. There is a running group at migym on Friday mornings and of course the ever faithful NBS Nelson Striders meet every Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and for longer runs on Saturday and Sunday mornings.  Email nelsonstriders@clear.net.nz for more info

4.    Don’t forget to service the guns! A strong arm drive coupled with a sturdy core will transfer to better uphill running. As this is an easy week try hitting the gym for some simple upper body weights and a 15 minute ab blast session.  Talk to staff at migym for advice.

5.    Nutrition: This week is your longest run and a great opportunity to practice race day nutrition. A good rule of thumb is some form of food/ gel every 45minutes and 400-800mls fluid per hour. The right fuel and electrolytes are vital – talk to the migym staff for advice

6.    Specificity: Minimise pre-race nerves by testing all or part of the course this week. If you have any questions/problems, now is the time to ask the team at migym and put your mind at ease!

7.    Don’t forget to rest! There are no more gains to be made from hard training in the final 2 weeks. Ease off and let the body recover. This is the perfect time to get a sports massage, call migym to book in today!

8.    Pace yourself: Let your legs get into a rhythm of its own not someone else’s. Failure on race day is highly correlated with starting too fast.

General Training tips:
-    Avoid big hills for the first 3 weeks. We are working on your ability to run consistently for a period of time, not how high you can get. Small hills are fine. Grampians saddle, Dun railway, Codgers, Tantragee road, Sharlands road (part way), Maitai walkway and the like are all good gradients. The pace should be comfortable ie. You should finish a run feeling you could have run further.

-    A common myth for hill runners is that they need to do all their running in the hills. Not true. Hills are slow. Too much steep hill running will slow your running down. Look carefully at the course. Escape from Tane’s Forest (Long course) has a harsh 20-30minute hill climb in it but the rest is either gradual climbing, undulating or downhill. Emulate this in your training.

-    If you think you are injured, see a sports massage therapist or a physio. Often the longer you leave it the worse it will get. The team at mimassage (located within migym) is ready to help if needed.

-    This race follows off road trails. Try to train off road as much as possible.

-    Unless otherwise stated during interval sessions the rest period is 2minutes of easy jogging in between intervals.

Tane’s gets the ‘Thumbs Up’.

The Escape from Tane’s Forest trailrunning course was always going to be a challenge, nothing less is expected from Nelson Events, and their latest creation certainly passed the test on Saturday.

Women’s winner Fleur Lattimore was estatic after she crossed the finish line – ‘That’s the best trailrun course I’ve ever competed over’ she commented, ‘looping inside the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary was so special – Nelsonians are spoilt to have such an area on their doorstep.’ She top tenned, eighth overall and 18minutes behind Long Course winner, Graeme Tayor who led all home in 2hrs 15mins 17sec.  His volunteer work for the Sanctuary certainly gave him ‘inside knowledge’ of the tracks and terrain of Nelson’s former waterworks site but his fleet footwork around the 25kms was outstanding.  Behind at Fringed Hill he took control before Third House and rarely had to look back especially once he was into ‘home territory’ in what will be the Sanctuary confines.

Chris Burr chased hard finishing just over a minute behind with Matt Reedy making up a Nelson trifecta.

Lattimore meanwhile was all class.  Her 2.33.20 back to Sanctuary HQ is a benchmark that the best in New Zealand will struggle to eclipse, next year will certainly create some competition.

Jane Reedy and Coast to Coast champion, Sophie Hart, were separated by less than a minute for second and third respectively claiming another Nelson trifecta with Reedy finishing in the top ten.

The Short Course proved popular with 55 finishing their off-road adventure full of smiles.  Winner Gus Shirley (Nelson) had the biggest but that got even bigger later in the evening as he watched his son bring out the match ball for the Crusaders versus Sharks clash on Trafalgar Park.

Canterbury’s Antony White and Andrew Ford (Auckland) threw down the challenge but Shirley had enough in store to hold them off.

Brittany Smith completed the Nelson domination on top of the dais with her women’s section win.  Karen Goodger (Nelson) was not far behind and third placed Erin Eyles (Chch) enjoyed her weekend away.
