The Abel Tasman Coastal Classic's 25th birthday

The Abel Tasman Coastal Classic celebrates its 25th anniversary in October and with it another sell out field of trailrunners for the iconic footrace from Awaroa to Marahau along the famed coastal track.

What began in 1994, in the infancy of off road events, quickly established itself as a “mustdo” on New Zealand’s running scene . This year’s event has an even split of men and women competing and has attracted over 40 entrants from overseas with 90% of the field travelling from outside the Nelson region. Also amongst them will be the two survivors, Chris Gates and Owen Rowse, keen to continue their legacy having completed every event.

This year’s base switches to Kaiteriteri with pre and post event celebrations held on the Reserve.
Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve CEO, David Ross, welcomes Nelson Events to host the ‘Classic’ bringing a large contingent of competitors and supporters to our golden shores. We already host Kaiteriteri Gold in March each year” he commented, “ but now to add another long standing very successful event is certainly a win win situation. Part of our Management Plan, and a very important role, is to support appropriate activities which improve recreation on the Reserve, within Abel Tasman National Park and also the Abel Tasman foreshore scenic reserve. The Classic certainly envelops all of this. drawing local, national and international visitors who leave certainly convinced that the event logo says it all.’’

‘If anyone ever asks what one event to put on the list for the run of a lifetime...it’s the Abel Tasman Coastal Classic.’
