Abel Tasman Coastal Classic Review

Clear skies, calm seas, a sell out field – all the boxes ticked for Nelson Events to celebrate the start of their 25th Abel Tasman Coastal Classic.

A low tide boat loading at Kaiteriteri could have been an imposition but Sea Shuttles and Aqua Taxis responded and all were on their way to Awaroa to run 33km along New Zealand’s famed coastal pathway back to Marahau,

Nelson’s Brett Smith led them home in 2.24.52. Flavio Vianna (Canterbury) tried to maintain company but he was left just over 3 minutes behind by the end. Fellow Cantabrian, Nathan Jones followed 12 minutes later.

The Women’s race was dominated by Kirsten Wright (Christchurch) who imposed her superiority for a top 10 overall finish - Ruby Morgan (Auckland) and Megan Ryan (Canterbury) kept her company at the prizegiving awards.

For Wellingtonians, Derek McGoldrick and Amanda Chen it was certainly a day to remember. Derek coming home 6th (2.44.38) but a surprise was in store for him when Amanda crossed the line. Dropping down onto one knee she turned the tables on ‘the establishment’ by popping the question to him. Hand in hand they walked off to the refreshment tent obviously both happy with his affirmative reply.

Survivors, Chris Gates (Nelson) and Owen Rowse (Wellington) made it #25 and now contemplate if they will be on next year’s start-line – tentatively set down for September 28th.

Next trail-run for Nelson Events is the Alpine Lodge Loop the Lake – with already over 200 registered as it heads towards another sell-out field.
