Temperatures in yesterday's Toxic Maungatapu Gold Murderers Trail hit their hottest in the events history, with the 113 riders confronted with plus 30 degrees as they pedalled their way up the Pelorus Valley.
Only one 'wilted' on the historic gold trail finding the going to tough just before the dam but by then all the resst were safely back at the Branford Park finish.
Marlborough's Richard Anderson is first to get his name engraved on the new trophy with his 1hour 43minutes 45seconds time also breaking Chris Sharland's longstanding 2004 Under 20 record. Nelson's Ethan Glover and Jonathan Kalma chased but couldn't catch the Marlbourian down the Maitai Valley Road.
Surprisingly only six women were adventurous enough to tackle the trail, with Susie Wood always 'odds on' to lead them home. This she achieved but both Liz Rogers and Alicja Maslowska had the satisfaction of finishing in the top half of the field and leaving many men wishing they had 'better legs'.
Wayne Pool found the conditions to his liking, shaving 44seconds off Grant Stirling's category 40-49 record set in 2001.

Fulton's record hopes falter with a flat

Full 2008 Results (pdf)

Dean Fulton's hopes of winning yesterdays Maungatapu Gold Murderers Trail Mountainbike literally went flat when he unfortunately punctured while out in front, in control, and gunning to establish a new record for the 40km stretch from Pelorus Bridge to Sunday Hole in the Maitai Valley.

Fulton was 'focussed and flying' as he attacked the gravel road along the Pelours Valley to the base of the mountain. However the curse of Murderers Rock struck, leaving Fulton short of air - the cannister he carried not containing enough to fully inflate his tyre. Michael Naylor produced a hand pump to complete the job but it was too late and youngster George Bennett had seized the opportunity and 'high-tailed' down from the summit and into the Maitai Valley leaving the field behind to fight out the minor placings. Michael Naylor chased hard but had to be content to accept a 46second deficit and second place at Sunday Hole with Fulton third a further 1min 24 back.

Brenda Clapp had it all her own way in the women's field finishing 17th overall and well clear of her young Swiss guest, Melanie Gay and third placed Jane Rose.
