Twenty years on and the Kaiteriteri Gold Half Marathon and 10km is ready to enter its third decade after 325 runners and walkers reached the golden sand finish line on Saturday.
Paula Canning is the only name to be added to the Honours Board in 2010, running 1.28.43 in the Shoreline Café Half Marathon to win the womens section and crossing the line third overall. Overall winner was Thomas Pettersson having a one minute advantage over Marlboroughs John Kennedy. USA visitor Curtis Moore was next in the Mens field and 4th overall, trailing Canning by 17seconds.
While Canning was in a class of her own in the womens field, Fleur Latimore put in a sterling effort for second with Sinead Shearing (Chch) third, five minutes in arrears.
The Half Marathon walk was a Denton affair Roger first home, narrowly holding out Bevan Cook and just missing out by 8 seconds on having his name added to the Honours Board for a second time.
Daughter Wendy Healey was third overall and with it first woman, comfortably ahead of Charmaine OShea (Kamo) and Sharon McDonald. Annette Denton didnt let the side down, she also took home a trophy through being first in her age category.
The Beached Whale 10km continued its growth in popularity with 169 finishing the undulating out and back course from the beach to the Marahau estuary and return.
Like Canning, Carol Cooper left all the men folk bar two behind her to claim third overall in a more than respectable time of 43.52 on the testing course. Gus Shirley was ahead, winning in 40.39, with Vaughan Joyce trailing just under a minute in his wake.
