Stu Cottam was the first to
'Escape from Tane's Forest' when the event's first edition was held
on Golden Bay's Kaituna Track. In what is described as a 'route suitable
only for experienced and fit trampers taking 8-9 hours' Cottam stopped
the clock on the west-east crossing at 2hours 9minutes 42seconds. Kelvin
Meade had his chance to win, joining Cottam as both crossed the river
at the Kaituna Forks but the Aucklander didn't have the legs to hold
on over the final three kilometers to the Naked Possum finish line.
Leo Simmonds (Nelson) was third.
Billie Marshall and Fiona Gilroy yo-yoed across the tops but an hour
from home on the highest point Marshall knew it wasn't going to be a
golden day. Gilroy at that stage was two minutes ahead and this she
extended to almost five by the end. Veronica Ulfves, fourth in January's
Croesus Crossing, went one place better and will continue her progress
up the podium in the future.
The plan now is to select a new destination for 2011 - the brief being,
north of Christchurch and Greymouth and a trail not commonly used by
runners, to provide trailrunners with new territory to conquer.
