The Subway Dun Run Entry Form

2009 Race Report
Watch-out for 'Whippet' Wilcox on the trails

There's over 90 trailruns now on the national calendar and watch out for a 'whippet from Nelson' to feature at the front of many of them in the years ahead.

Her names, Josie Wilcox, 18 years young and about to embark on an athletics scholarship in America but when she's back, if she doesn't make her name on the track or roads it will certainly be on the trails. In yesterday's 15th Subway Dun Run she blitzed Carlene MacDonald's 2002 record by over seven minutes, finishing 8th overall in a record field around Nelson's 'backcountry'. Runner-up Fleur Lattimore knew she had a race on at the startline with Wilcox's stamina over 25km unknown. At the 875m Dun Mountain Saddle she trailed by just over two minutes and with an hour left to run it was thought the contest would close. However it didn't, and with drizzly conditions providing ideal running temperatures coupled with the track having had a recent upgrade Wilcox 'skipped' away to double the margin to over four minutes. Both now join the 'Copper Bunch' (sub 2hr 25) achievers however Wilcox's wry comment that this could now be restricted to sub 2.15 performers in the future would leave her as the solitary member for some time. Wellington's Marjolein Ros picked up third ahead of Fiona Gilroy (Rolleston) with Seini O'Conner (Wtgn) rounding off the top five.

The men's 'Chromite Bunch' (under 2hrs) has some high performing names in it's six strong famed few. Martin Cox 1.53.09, Greg Fraine 1.55.54 and 1.58.26, Kim Hogarth, 1.55.58, Stu Cottam, 1.57.01 and Colin Rolfe 1.57.12 are now joined by Trevor Voyce who snuck under the qualifying time by 27 seconds. Runner-up in this year' Coast to Coast, Voyce has been concentrating on his future career as a teacher but would be well pleased that he's 'wintered well' and ready to focus on his 2010 challenges. It was a Nelson trifecta taking out the top three, Andrew Siggers followed by Matt Griffin.
Chris Gates, set the second new record with his 2.17.23 win in the men's 50-59, all the more impressive as a 6.00am start had him running the course in reverse to mark strategic points as part of the event's safety plan before retracing his steps and finishing 11th overall.

2008 Race Report

Nelson's got a new name on it's running scene and he can run! Kim Hogarth, on Saturday, joined the 'Chromite Bunch', a 5 strong elite group who have broken 120 minutes on the testing Subway Dun Run course during it's 14 year history.
Reaching the Dun Saddle in 55 minutes he was on target to eclipse Englishman Martin Cox's 2.53.08 record but it wasn't to be, leaving Hogarth keen to venture up into Nelson's backblocks in 2009 to achieve his goal. Thomas Pettersson's name has been heard many times in cycling circles but his performance on the nuggetty course will ensure he is a 'marked' name in future trail runs and chasing him down for Mens 40-49 honours was Te Awamutu's Glenn Sexton and local Stu Cottam. The later, also a Chromite Bunch member. Ken Page and Scott Robertson had a good tussle for minor placings in the Under 40 Men with just nine seconds separating them at the line.

The NBS Nelson Striders have a 'habit' of attracting overseas runners into it's ranks and currently, from Holland, Klaartje van Schie, and Chiho Kamiyama of Japan, are getting a taste of the region on foot with their running group. While van Schie (2.27.56), just missed admission to the Copper Bunch (Women under 2hours 25minutes) she was to classy for the rest of the women's field, and most of the men's field, finishing in 8th place overall, it was Kamiyama who 'stole the show'. In Nelson to improve her English language skills she remarked as she crossed the line that she 'wasn't a soft ba......d' - demonstrating she has indeed already learnt some 'Strider Slang'! Having spent a year away from the region, Di Cooper has returned and is making her presence felt with her second placing well clear of Marlborough's Janie Meikle. Gaye Evans has made a full return to form with a gutsy 2.48.05 to win the 40-49 section and place 5th Women's field.

The Dun Run culminates the 2008 Southtop Strider Trails and the focus now switches to the roads with the groups Half Marathon and 10km three event Series. This launches on November 23rd with the Smith Sports Shoes Mahana Half and 10km which also includes the Moutere Mile for 5 to 15 year olds.

Croesus Crossing on January 17 marks the beginning of the 2009 Southtop Strider Trail series with the field limited to 100. The course follows the Croesus track from Barrytown to Blackball on the West Coast and provides some stunning scenery in a dramatic landscape.
