89 Conquer Croesus.
The
West Coast turned it on weather-wise for the 9th Blackball Hilton Croesus
Crossing and with it a record field successfully trail-running the 26km
challenging route from Barrytown to Blackball.
Leading
them home was Christchurchs Matt Scott (2 hours, 50mins, 31),
holding out Andrew Verwey (Reefton) over the final two kilometers by
52 seconds. Andrew Reese-Jones (Chch) put in another quality run to
also break the three hour barrier for the tough journey and with it
claim first place in the Men 40-49 category.
Hokitikas
Helen Gillespie was in a class of her own in the well supported, 33
strong, womens field recording 3.17.48 and with it 9th overall.
Behind her nothing much separated Sara Prince and Thea Sweeney.
Next
year the event celebrates its 10th anniversary, the tentative date is
Saturday 22 January with sole survivor since 2002, Keith
Frankum (Hastings) already confirmed on the startline.
Next
up for Nelson Events on their trial running calendar is Escape from
Tanes Forest with Golden Bays Kaituna Track chosen for the
inaugural race on Saturday March 27th. After that is the Alpine Lodge
Loop the Lake (Sat April 24), with half of the 300 allowable places
already sold.

Kennedy wins Croesus Crossing
It was a successful trailrunning trip for Marlborough's John Kennedy
over the weekend when he won the annual Blackball Hilton Croesus Crossing
from Barrytown to Blackball on the West Coast.
The 65 competitors were 'treated' with real Coast conditions on their
25km journey getting drenched as they crossed the Paparoas but all emerged
safe with smiles aplenty when they reached the Blackball Hilton finish.
Kennedy trailed Canterbury's Andrew Reese-Jones until they both emerged
from the bush when the Marlbarian took control on the final 7km road
section to win by 3 minutes.
The women's race was also close with Koleighne Ford (Chch) and Wellington's
Billie Marshall only separated by 22 seconds. Japanese visitor, based
in Nelson, Chiho Komiyama was just over 2 minutes adrift for third.
Next year's crossing is scheduled for Saturday January 16th with sunshine
already ordered.

Currant conquers Croesus Crossing
A cloudless West Coast sky couldn't have offered better conditions for
Saturday's 26km Croesus Crossing trail run from Barrytown to Blackball.
Cliff Bowman was swiftly 'out of the blocks' and first to reach Ces
Clark Hut but then discovered the 'demons' on his descent. Fellow Nelsonian
and relative rookie to trailrunning, Brent Stebbings, snatched the opportunity
to take the lead, held it all the way until the final gravel section
before hitting the tarseal just before the Blackball Hilton finish where
suddenly Christchurch based UK doctor, Paul Currant appeared on the
scene, surprising Stebbings who didn't quite have the pace to repel
his challenge. Currant held on to win the annual event in 2hours 53minutes
41seconds. Stebbing, second, 18seconds back with another Nelsonian,
Ed Rimmer, three minutes adrift in third place. Four others, Naoki Ouchi
(Japan), 2007 winner and first 40-49, Robert Jarvis, (Chch), Matty Graham
(Hokitika) and Bowman also eclipsed 3 hours a real achievement based
on previous year's results. Marlborough's Ian Partner and Motueka's
Norman Carrington were the respective Men's 50-59 and 60plus winners.
Seventeen women took up the challenge with the Canterbury pair of Vicki
Conradson and Koleighne Ford along with Michelle Jacques (Ross) having
a solid tussel for bragging rights and the 2008 title. Conradson, took
control on the ascent from Barrytown and maintained her lead throughout
to cross the line in 3.31.04. Jacques was holding on to 'silver' until
out of the bush and onto the gravel where a faster finishing Ford swept
past leaving her rival with nothing left to take up the chase. Lisa
Nicholl (40-49) and Linda Sillery (50-59) rounded out the age group
titles.
Japanese Runner Inc, executive team made the journey 'downunder' to
witness the event first hand to include the event in a special edition
focussing on Trailrunning and possibly entice some of the fast growing
trail running exponents to consider traveling for the event in future
years. It will be interesting guaging the developments but their photoshots
from Ces Clark Hut will certainly capture the essence and synogyof the
Coast at it's brilliant best.
